The Joint Committee for Family Planning approves Family Planning training programmes that are provided by the Irish College of General Practitioners, Family Planning clinics, Health Boards and GP vocational training programmes.  On completion of an approved course of training, the Committee then certifies doctors in Family Planning and maintains a register of doctors with Family Planning certificates.

The Committee also approves training in specialised areas of FP such as IUCD and implant insertions.

The Joint Committee for Family Planning also approves and certifies the training of Family Planning Instructing Doctors These doctors supervise the practical training of those undertaking basis training in Family Planning.
